About the Seeds of Change Trial Crop Program

Just as the earliest farmers selected seeds from their best plants to assure an improved harvest for the following year, we work hard to bring the best seed possible to organic farmers to assure success with their crops. Every year our extensive research program evaluates hundreds of new and interesting plant varieties from around the world. When we find one we think is worth preserving, we often work to improve the selected strain before we begin production. Over the past four years Seeds of Change has established a network of organic farmers who trial Seeds of Change varieties on their farms.
Throughout each growing season, a representative from Seeds of Change visits each field to collect data and evaluate the performance of each variety with the grower. The farmers compare varieties from Seeds of Change with other commercially available varieties and provide feedback on the varieties' performance. The field evaluations focus on agronomic traits such as:

A hybrid seed has been bred for various qualities including disease resistance and production yield. As diseases evolve to attack the newer hybrids, the hybrid itself is re-engineered to combat the evolving threat. Hybrids are also engineered for specific climates and environments. A side effect of a hybrid plant is it will often not produce new plants from it’s seed and therefore will require you to purchase new seeds each year. This is all very good for the corporate machine. It is very bad for your long term survival, to depend upon the availability of these seeds at your local Walmart.

Heirloom seeds will produce plants that have the same genetic make up, and will be exactly the same as their parents. It will be the same plant, and have the same taste that you remember from your grandparents garden plants. A heirloom plant is one that has been passed down through generations.
More importantly, the seeds of the heirloom plant will again be exactly the same and will produce again for the next growing season. It is a self sustaining food producing system, whereas hybrid plants and their saved seeds often do not produce the second time around. Those tomatoes, potatoes and carrots you see in the grocery all look relatively the same. The tomatoes are always red, round and shiny, and the carrots orange. These vegetables did not always look like this. There are hundreds of different varieties of these vegetables being grown around the world that you may have never even seen or heard of.
Heritage varieties of vegetables (also referred to as heirloom vegetables) are those varieties, which have been openly pollinated and have existed for more than fifty years. If you have ever gone to a local farmers market with a variety of organic produce available, you may have seen green and pink tomatoes or purple carrots. These strange and interesting varieties on your old favourites are heritage vegetables.
These veggies are colorful!
Heritage carrots may be purple, pink or even black. Heritage tomatoes can be as small as peas or as big as melons, they can be green and pink, striped or purple and red or even shaped like bananas. Heritage potatoes can be purple, red or pink, large or small and long or round. The variety in flavour, size and color means a healthy combination of vitamins and minerals and more excitement for your dinner table. Your children will love these fun vegetables as much as you do.
Heritage vegetables provide important vitamins
A balanced diet consists of an ever-changing variety of fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains. Eating carrots every day is healthy, but carrots contain only some of the many vitamins and minerals necessary to your health. Expanding your palate and your table to include a rich variety of colors and flavours is beneficial to the health of your body and mind.
The color of a vegetable means something more than what it looks like. The colors of vegetables are affected by the vitamins and minerals contained therein. Having a literally colourful diet is important for your health. A blueberry and a purple carrot both provide your body with antioxidants, blueberries are in anthocyanin pigments which are powerful antioxidants. And carrots contain carotenoid pigments, the darker the colour of a carrot means that this carrot contains a higher concentration of carotenoids than say, an orange carrot.
Short history of heritage vegetables
Over the last one hundred years, seed diversity has been shrinking. Plants have been bred for their disease resistance, shelf life, and ability to travel. This is the equivalent of in-breeding your vegetables. Heritage vegetable varieties have withstood this narrowing and contaminating of vegetable varieties.
With the development of supermarkets, and the large industrial farm, the acts of growing and eating have changed. You may live hundreds of miles from the farm on which your produce was grown. The tomato or carrot you are eating had to be bred to travel in a truck, to then sit on a shelf for a long time. One hundred years ago these factors were not a concern. Heritage vegetables do not travel or sit well. If you are eating heritage vegetables, chances are they are local.

One of the floral delights of Devon, Plant World Gardens are laid out to represent each of the five continents of the world. Inspirational gardens from around the world contain countless rare and exotic plants seldom seen outside their native lands. A large mature cottage garden and mediterranean garden completes the collection.

Established in 1985, Plant World is the culmination of plantsman Ray Brown's lifelong ambition and has been featured on the BBC, ITV and Channel 4. The magnificent views over the Teign Valley, from Dartmoor to the sea, provide the incredible backdrop to what will surely be a memorable visit. So if you are passionate about plants and gardens, Plant World is a definite 'must-see' during your visit to beautiful South Devon.

Opening times: The gardens are open from 9:30 to 17:00 daily, seven days a week, from April until mid October.

Admission prices: Day tickets are £3.00. Season tickets for unlimited visits are £10.00.

We recommend a minimum of an hour and a half to see the gardens and nursery; very keen gardeners often spend the day here. Heritage Farm

Heritage Farm is the headquarters of Seed Savers Exchange. The farm is located six miles north of Decorah, Iowa. Nestled among sparkling streams, limestone bluffs, and century-old white pine woods, the 890-acre farm is a living museum of historic varieties. Thousands of heirlooms are grown in certified organic fields. The farm includes:

The buildings on the farm are also a treasure. Amish carpenters have built a meeting center in the barn’s cathedral-like loft and have completed Lillian Goldman Visitors Center that offers a wide selection of heirloom seeds, horticultural books and garden gifts.

Preservation Gardens

There are many thousands of heirloom garden varieties being permanently maintained at Heritage Farm. The Preservation Gardens are planted on certified organic land and are open for public viewing. From each packet of seed purchased, 25 cents goes into an endowment to help pay salaries of employees who maintain SSE's vast collection.

Historic Orchard

In 1900 there were about 8,000 named varieties of apples in the U.S., but the vast majority are already extinct and the rest are steadily dying out. In an attempt to halt this constant genetic erosion, SSE has obtained all of the pre-1900 varieties that still exist in government collections and large private collections, but has only found about 700 that remain of the 8,000 known in 1900. SSE has developed a diverse public orchard, where hundreds of different varieties of 19th century apples are on display. SSE's Historic Orchard also contains many old grapes, including more than 100 breeding lines from the collection of famed grape breederm, Elmer Swenson.

Ancient White Park Cattle

These cattle roamed the British Isles before the time of Christ, and are described exactly in ancient Celtic lore. Today only about 800 of these extremely rare, wild cattle survive worldwide, including slightly more than 200 in the U.S. (and about 80 of those reside at Heritage Farm). These distinctive cattle have white coats, lyre-shaped horns with black tips, and black ears, noses, eyes, teats and hooves (and sometimes black is splashed from the hooves up the front shins toward the knees). The cows are intelligent, alert, quite hardy, healthy, and are aggressive grazers that favor brush.

Mustard

This plant has been used as a green and to spice up food for generations. It is an easy, fast-growing crop. The raw greens are delicious in salads and cooked. The seeds can be harvested to make the famous mustard condiment so often enjoyed on hot dogs and hamburgers.
Plant Details: There are various types of mustard plants with different leaf structures, tastes and colors. Mustard is a great plant to grow in Southern, Central and Northern United States because of the weather. Their flowers are bright yellow flowers that are insect pollinated.
Growing Conditions: Mustard seeds should be planted every 3 inches and covered by ¼ inch of soil. The rows should be about a foot apart, and the seedlings should be thinned to every 5 to 9 inches. They prefer cool weather, full sun exposure, plenty of water and fertilizer. Hot weather causes the plant to prematurely bolt. The seeds are best planted at intervals to ensure a long harvest period.
Days to Maturity: Mustard plants mature in 45 to 50 days. The seeds are ready to be harvested once the plant turns yellow. They should remain on the plant as long as possible, yet harvested before their pods burst. Mustard greens are delicious when harvested while young and still tender.
Nutrition: Mustard leaves are low in calories (11 calories per ½ cup) and high in vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron.

Versatile and hardy in the kitchen and the garden, beans are excellent crops for home gardeners. They are highly adaptable, fast growing, and store for long periods of time with very little work. Though small in size, they are highly nutritious. These legumes are one of the oldest foods on the planet. At least one type of bean originates from every continent, excluding Antarctica.
Plant Details: Some varieties grow on bushes, while others grow on vines. Beans are generally divided into 3 categories: snap, shell, and dry. Beans are not always green; some varieties are yellow, purple, red, and multi-colored. There is no need to worry about genetic contamination because beans are self-pollinating. Fertilization occurs before the flowers open.
Beans contain symbiotic bacteria that metabolize nitrogen into the soil, fertilizing themselves along with neighboring plants. After harvest, the plants make great compost for next year’s crops.
Growing Conditions: Beans are annuals that grow best in warm weather (70-80 degrees F / 21-26 degrees C) with exposure to full sunlight in well-watered, well-drained soil. The best time to plant is 1 week after the last spring frost.
Days to Maturity: Beans range between 40 and 90 days to mature, depending on the type and variety. The seeds save for up to 5 years.
Nutrition: Beans contain Protein, Fiber, and Vitamins A, C, and B.

This easy to grow root vegetable makes a tasty addition to soups, salads and other dishes. Its taste is similar to a sweet turnip. The first records of Rutabaga come from Southern Europe in the 17th century when it was used as animal feed.
Plant Details: A cross between a cabbage and a turnip, Rutabagas (Brassica napus) is a biennial with large roots the size of a softball. The colors range from tan to violet. The round root becomes more flavorful when cooked. The smaller cultivars have a sweeter flavor.
This plant requires insect pollination. Rutabagas needs to be transplanted its second spring about 200 feet away from other varieties to prevent genetic contamination. Seeds do not set until the second year.
Growing Conditions: This crop does best in the fall or cool summers. The roots become tough and inedible in hot weather. The seeds should be planted every 2 inches in rows at least 15 inches apart. Germination takes place in 4 to 7 days in weather ranging 45 to 85 degrees F (7 to 29 degrees C). Thin the seedlings 6 to 8 inches apart when they reach 3 inches tall. This plant does well in a variety of soils and full sunlight.
Days to Maturity: This plant matures in 90 to 100 days. Rutabaga stores for up to one month in the refrigerator and four months at 32 degrees F (0 degrees C). The seeds store for 3 years.
Nutrition: One half cup of Rutabaga is only 25 calories and gives you a good dose of fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and protein

I have been growing my own organically raised seeds in this location for over 6 years. I am an experienced gardener and a graduate of the Pennsylvania Master Gardener program. Not only am I the sole owner of Amishland Heirloom Seeds but I am the only employee of my unique seed company with no other human or mechanical help. When I say I do it by hand, I am not kidding. I have a spade, shovel and my (sometimes aching) back! I am very proud of what I have been able to accomplish in just a few short years on my very fertile small plot of land here in "Pennsylvania Dutch" country, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

I specialize in rare varieties grown in my local area since the 1700's by the farmers who settled in the rich central Pennsylvania farmland where I live. These seeds, mostly vegetables and a few flowers, ( to grow "chust for nice" as they say locally) have been cultivated for generations by my Pennsylvania neighbors. I live surrounded by Old Order Amish, Old Order Mennonite, and Pennsylvania German farm families on their multigenerational farms. (Old Order means they farm with horses or mules and use horse drawn buggies and wagons- no cars, no tractors, etc.) You cannot find many of these historic, rare heirlooms anywhere but here at Amishland Heirloom Seeds.

Besides my local heirlooms, I also offer rare colored, unusual, landrace, exotic, and foreign seeds from around the world. Many of my seed offerings are exclusive to the United States. I have travelled extensively to 38 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, South and North America. I lived for over two and half years in the Himalayan Mountains in Kashmir, India (many believe this is the original "Shangri-La," and it is also the home of the historic Moghgul era Shalimar Gardens.) I have also lived and worked in Panama, Israel, Seychelles Islands, and Sri Lanka. I will try to share some of my personal stories of how the rest of the world grows their food and what they really eat. I have since traded seeds with a host of dedicated fellow gardeners and seed savers from 5 continents. I grow out these unique seeds for you from my own plants so that I can offer you the most unusual, exotic and rare vegetables and flower seeds.

To my knowledge, I am only one of 3 seed companies in the United States that truly grows ALL of their own seed stock, which means I may, by necessity, have limited quantities of some of my offerings.

Because I grow all my own plants using safe, proven organic methods, I never use poisons, pesticides or any non-organic material on my plants. I use only products that are nationallycertified for organic growers. I am not able to be certified organic since the cost is prohibitive in my state for a small hobby business such as mine. I save all of my seeds strictly following Susan Ashworth's methods outlined in her fabulous "bible" of seed saving: Seed to Seed. I also follow her detailed instructions for isolating plants for maximum seed purity (so the plants will not be crossed in any way). I have made every effort to keep the varieties pure and consistent with their original descriptions and flavor, by the process known as "roguing-out," where only the best examples of that plant are collected for seed saving.

I have signed the "SAFE SEED PLEDGE," which states the I will never knowingly sell genetically modified, or "Terminator Technology" seeds. Because I grow absolutely all of my own plants for all the seeds I sell, however, this will not be a worry for all of my gardening friends. These are ONLY my own seeds, and absolutely none come from any commercial source.

I only grow open-pollinated varieties of plants that have stood the test of time. I take all my own photographs of only my plants. I take hours trying for the perfect photo that shows you the beauty and true colors of my peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, flowers and so forth. I never use any enhancements or computer generated "gizmos" to make the photos look better or different. What you see is what I actually grew out. I have copyrighted all of my photos and all of my own copy and descriptions. I trust you will ask permission from me if you need to make a copy for your own growing records. Recently I have sourced several more very Rare Veggies of vegetables and flowers which I now have grown out in sufficient quantities to finally offer these seeds for sale. I especially love really unusual, rare, hard to find historical vegetables. Therefore, I am now offering a much larger selection of seeds from all over the world, that I hope will knock your socks off with their wild, unexpected colors and appearance.

Since I worked for years at an 18th century Pennsylvania German Living History Museum, I particularly treasure the history and stories that go with each plant. I carefully research and document as much information and history as I am able to find for each variety of seed I sell. Much of that information is from my personal experience in that country or from my many local gardener friends. Therefore you will learn so much more here than from other seed sellers about the varieties of vegetables and flowers I sell. I want to share with you, the home gardener, as much information as I am able. You will not just purchase my open pollinated seeds, you will also get a real education and personal history about that plant. I feel it is very important to keep the stories behind the plants alive, as well as ensuring their rich heritage by planting, growing and actually eating them.

I offer you my own personal tried and true Seed Starting and Growing Tips. You may be surprised by some of my tips, but I promise you will have a great deal more success starting and growing your seedlings. You can read my specialized, detailed, growing instructions that come from my years of gardening, much book research, ( you should see my library of antique and out of print farming and gardening books! ). And most of all, what I have learned from those gardener friends older and wiser than myself.

I want you to be able to grow and savor the wonderful taste of old fashioned, heirloom vegetables, which were grown for eating quality and taste, not just for looks and shipping ability like today's hybrid commercial vegetables. I want you to have the garden of your dreams. Now you will be able to savor the delicious flavors, that our ancestors took for granted, that are so lacking in most of today's modern, hybrid and genetically altered vegetables. You may see colors and shapes that you never imagined or knew existed, all in my old time or exotic heirloom varieties. The Flower Seeds I offer are the older, often much more fragrant, and bug-resistant types such as your great-grandmother might have grown. I will be selling as many kinds as I have sufficient quantities of seed to share. I am especially excited about my "Heppler Farm" sweet pea, which has never been available for sale before. I am more of a vegetable gardener, so I offer really easy to grow flowers that you can plant, forget and just enjoy later on.

I welcome your requests for unusual, old fashioned, or even foreign varieties that you have been searching for. You may remember something a grandparent or ancestor grew and may be seeking it out. I often have rare seeds in insufficient quantities to post on this website that I may be able to sell to those that have been searching for that "holy grail" of a lost variety. I also welcome seeds trades of very unusual seeds. Please remember, I have a very large number of seeds not listed here in my personal collection. I also have a limited ability to isolate large growers such as pumpkins, squash, and cabbage. Please feel free to email me with your "wish lists" and what seeds you might want to trade. What the heirloom seed movement is about

The movement is made up of backyard gardeners and organic farmers dedicated to preserving seeds. These are seeds that have not been inbred or genetically altered in any way. Most heirloom seeds date back hundreds of years to the early colonial period; however, an heirloom seed is any seed that was introduced before the 1920’s, before hybrid crops were first commercialized.

They are named as such because they can be traced back to their origins, connecting us to our own heritage. The movement preserves seeds used by ancient Mesoamerican and Native American peoples along with seeds brought across the Atlantic by early immigrant populations from all over the world.

Heirloom seeds provide farmers and gardeners the freedom to save seeds and breed new varieties. This in turn frees the agricultural industry from complete privatization and corporate takeover. The movement works to preserve plants that are adapted to specific soils of place, adaptable to climates, resistant to local pests and diseases, and produce healthier, more flavorful food. Saving and sharing heirloom seed encourages genetic plant diversity which gives us reliable food security.

These types of seeds are also referred to as heritage seeds, non-hybrid seeds, Non-GMO seeds, and open-pollinated seeds. The term “open-pollinated” means that the seeds are fertile and come back year after year true to type, looking like their parent plants because of no genetic tampering or severe inbreeding.

The history of the heirloom seed movement

Heirloom seeds exist only because of the heirloom seed movement. True heirloom seeds are not available commercially. The only way they can be obtained is from gardeners, farmers, and seed exchanges dedicated to saving and sharing precious seed resources with others interested in joining and expanding the heirloom seed movement.

Why the heirloom seed movement began
Over the past 60 years multinational corporations have been gaining control over the availability and distribution of seeds. Modern seed production involves inbred plant varieties, genetically modified plant genes, and chemical sprays. Their patented and sterilized seeds prevent farmers and gardeners from saving and replanting.

In the 1970’s, seed patents and technology contracts forced farmers to return to the seed companies for seed year after year. Alarm grew as growers were becoming dependant on seed companies and seed varieties were disappearing. People became concerned about preserving genetic seed resources and conserving plant diversity. Many seed-saving organizations and seed exchange networks developed as a result, beginning this movement.

One of the first organizations was the Seed Savers Exchange, founded in 1975 by Kent and Dianne Whealy. Their seed collection started with seeds given to them from Diane’s grandfather. The seeds had been brought from Bavaria to Iowa in the 1870’s by Diane’s great-grandparents. The Seed Savers Exchange has since grown into the largest non-governmental seed bank in the United States.
